Fuse | Experiential Awareness Campaign
Fuse is an experiential awareness campaign designed to encourage more people to consider becoming foster carers. The project explores how immersive, physical spaces can be used to communicate complex emotional narratives and raise awareness around overlooked social issues.
The campaign focuses on the foster care system, aiming to create an emotionally resonant experience that prompts reflection, empathy, and action.
Context & Intent
The project was developed with the freedom to define my own brief, allowing me to explore an unfamiliar subject in depth. I deliberately chose to focus on the foster care system; a topic that is often misunderstood or overlooked, with the intention of creating work that was both thought-provoking and meaningful.
Research and conversations with specialists informed the direction of the campaign, helping shape an approach that was sensitive, informed, and grounded in real experiences.
Fuse centres around a walk-through installation composed of three rooms, each representing a different stage in a foster child’s emotional journey. The spatial narrative allows visitors to physically move through the experience, encouraging deeper emotional engagement than traditional awareness materials.
By combining visual storytelling with physical immersion, the installation aims to help visitors better understand the emotional realities of foster care.
The Concept
The exterior of the installation is covered in colourful photo frames depicting a wide range of families. This was designed to challenge stereotypes around fostering and communicate that anyone can foster, regardless of background or circumstance.
The contrast between the inviting exterior and the more emotionally reflective interior spaces was intentional, helping draw people in while preparing them for a deeper experience.
Visual Design
The installation acts as both a visual experience and an informative touchpoint. Alongside the emotional journey, visitors are provided with information about fostering and clear next steps on how to get involved.
The aim was to move beyond awareness alone and encourage meaningful engagement with the cause.
Experience & Message
Outcomes & Learnings
Fuse demonstrates how experiential design can be used to communicate sensitive topics in a respectful and impactful way. The project strengthened my ability to approach complex subjects with empathy, conduct informed research, and translate abstract ideas into physical, immersive experiences.
It also reinforced the importance of designing campaigns that balance emotional impact with clarity and purpose.
